We actually did an engagement shoot really early on, mostly because I wanted awesome pictures of us. We didn't use them for our save-the-dates, but I'll be sending some of the prints I got made out with holiday cards for our family members to put up on their refrigerators.
Ultimately though, we got engagement pictures taken because I wanted the pictures for us. I don't want the only really good pictures we have of ourselves to be from our wedding. I wanted pictures of us, being us, having fun, not being stressed out or overly made up. I wanted us to look like we normally do, but as if somebody with a really nice camera who only cared about us took the pictures.
We actually only paid $30 for the first e-shoot we did, and so far, mostly, we use the pictures for our desktop background. Totally worth it.
My sister also took our engagement pictures and made a display of them for our engagement party, which we might use for our table numbers as well. It worked out really nicely and is a cheap and easy way to do it. It's actually pretty common for people to use their e-pics for table numbers, and it's my favorite idea because it lets you show off all of the great shots. This is what my sister did - http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4TkU4VrevKk/Su3VxL9in3I/AAAAAAAAEVw/TrrRSW_EQOE/s800/P1010924.JPG
